Step 2: Creating a Respectful Classroom Environment

Goal: To help teachers establish a safe and respectful classroom environment, conducive to open discussion and differences in opinion.

What is the Role of Respect in the Learning Environment?
As a teacher, you know that establishing a respectful classroom environment has its benefits for saving classroom management time throughout the year. And more importantly, a respectful environment allows the students to accomplish their academic goals in a more deep and meaningful way. To handle participating in discussions around the topics of abuse, students must commit to doing their part to create a safe and respectful classroom environment. A respectful classroom environment is one where students and teachers practice respect for one another. This carries over to students practicing respect for one another outside the classroom, too.

Lessons from Literature Resources
We've included several resources to help teachers establish a classroom climate conducive to open dialogue about abuse. Additionally, the model lessons inside the Classroom Manual contain activity ideas for challenging students to consider and follow principles of respect in the classroom and in their lives outside the classroom. We invite you to explore the following:
